Children’s Dentistry

Friendly, fear-free visits that build healthy habits for life.

A great start at the dentist can shape how your child feels about their smile for life. At Smile360 Chicago, Dr. Mustafa Salam welcomes kids of every age with patient, gentle, judgment-free care — right on the North Side of Chicago on Devon Avenue. From a first checkup to cleanings, cavity prevention, and the occasional wiggly-tooth worry, we make every visit calm, friendly, and refreshingly easy for little ones and parents alike.

The short version

  • First visit by age one, or when the first tooth appears
  • A gentle, fear-free approach kids actually enjoy
  • Cleanings, fluoride, and sealants to prevent cavities
  • One friendly practice for your whole family

When should my child first see a dentist?

Sooner than most parents expect. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by your child's first birthday, or as soon as their first tooth appears. Early visits are short and low-key — a gentle look, a chance for your child to get comfortable, and simple, practical guidance on brushing, fluoride, and diet so small problems never get the chance to start.

Tip

Bring your child along to one of your own checkups first. Seeing you relaxed in the chair makes their own first visit feel familiar instead of scary.

Gentle, fear-free visits kids actually like

We explain everything in words a child understands, move at their pace, and keep the whole visit relaxed and unhurried — no rushing, no scary surprises. Is your child nervous? That's completely normal, and we're patient with it. A calm, positive early experience is one of the best things you can do for a lifetime of healthy teeth.

Children’s Dentistry

Preventive care for growing smiles

Most of children's dentistry is about stopping cavities before they start. Alongside gentle cleanings and exams, we offer:

  • Fluoride treatments that strengthen developing enamel
  • Dental sealants that shield the grooves of back teeth, where cavities most often begin
  • Digital, low-dose X-rays, only when they're truly needed
  • Simple, at-home coaching on brushing, flossing, and smart snacks

And because baby teeth hold space for the adult teeth to come in straight, protecting them now sets your child up for a healthier smile later.

A calm first visit sets the tone for a lifetime of fearless dental care.

For most children, every six months. Regular visits let us catch small issues early, keep teeth clean, apply fluoride or sealants as needed, and track your child's smile as it develops.

Absolutely — and it's completely normal. We explain everything in kid-friendly language, go at your child's pace, and keep the visit calm and unhurried, with no rushing or scary surprises. Our goal is a positive experience that makes the next visit even easier.

Sealants are a thin protective coating we paint onto the grooves of the back teeth, where cavities most often start. They're quick, painless, and very effective at keeping food and bacteria out — a great option for many kids once their molars come in.

Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste — a rice-sized smear under age 3, and a pea-sized amount from ages 3 to 6 — limit sugary drinks and snacks, and keep up regular checkups. We'll also recommend fluoride treatments and sealants when they'll help.

Yes — even though they eventually fall out. Baby teeth help your child chew, speak clearly, and smile with confidence, and they hold space so adult teeth come in straight. Caring for them now helps prevent pain, infection, and bigger problems down the road.
